Exciting day drive in Denmark
Copenhagen to Malmo
Öresund Bridge, Pepper Island and Malmo
Crossing awe-inspiring bridges is a feature when travelling around Denmark and the amazing Öresund Bridge offers the next day trip for a family. Get settled into the luxurious cabin of your tough and stylish BMW X5 and head out of Copenhagen on the E20, south west. The scenic drive takes you to the coast and the Öresund Bridge. This world famous structure, at 7.8km long, is the longest cable tied rail and road bridge in Europe.
The Bridge joins up with the Drogden tunnel on the artificial island of Peberholm or Pepper Islet. This name was given to match with the natural island nearby which is called Saltholm or Salt Islet. Peberholm is a protected nature reserve and was constructed from rocks and soil dredged up during the building of the bridge and tunnel.
When you arrive on the Swedish side, head to centre of the City where you will find the three famous Squares, Gustav Adolf’s Square, the Big Square, Stortorget, and the Little Square, Lilla Torg. The Little Square is filled with trendy eateries and is the perfect venue to enjoy a brunch at an outdoor restaurant and do some people watching.
After brunch, drive to the imposing Malmöhus Castle, located west of the Old City. It was built in 1437 and was used by the Kings of Denmark in the 1500s.
As you drive, you cannot miss the Turning Torso, the tallest building in Scandinavia at 190m. It offers modern architecture and is located near the trendy waterfront promenade. Stop here for a cooling dip in the open-sea bath. Sweden is steeped in seafaring history and a visit to the Koggmuseet is a must. Inside, you can explore two cog ships that resemble the originals from the middle ages.
Malmö is often known as Falafel Staden or Falafel City, due to the many street vendors selling freshly made falafel. Enjoy a delicious fast-food meal of deep fried chickpea balls in a flatbread wrap, together with lettuce, tomato, gherkins and other pickles. Then relax in the lovely Kungsparken behind the Castle, where you can soak up the sun.
When evening falls, head back to Copenhagen for dinner and a night at the exclusive boutique Nimb Hotel, located in the magnificent Tivoli Park.
