Driving around Aarhus in style
Picture perfect Old Town
Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark and is located on the Jutland peninsula. This Viking-founded ancient town offers picture-postcard scenes of colourful houses, tranquil waterways and quaint hidden shops. With a local nickname ‘The City of Smiles’ you are sure to have a fabulous time!
Get settled into your stylish rental Audi A5 and drive to the famous Moesgaard Museum, about 10 km south of the city. It is located in a spectacular modern design building of angular lines that rise out of a grassy knoll. Stroll around and see the main feature, the 2000 year old Grauballe Man who was found in the nearby village of Grauballe, in 1952.
Your next stop is the imposing Aarhus Domkirke, the longest church in Denmark with a nave that extends for almost 100m. The Romanesque style chapel at the eastern end dates back to the 12th century. A walk in nature is now in order and you can drive to the beautiful Aarhus Botanical Gardens. This 21 hectare space is filled with thousands of species of plants. There are open lawns, ponds, landscaped gardens and a greenhouse to explore. Relax at the café and enjoy syrup-smothered waffles and coffee.
Get into an enchanting story-book mood and drive to the Den Gamle By Museum. This open-air museum features over 70 magnificent half-timbered houses that have been reconstructed to resemble the market home town of Hans Christian Andersen.
It is time for lunch and the Nordisk Spisehus is the destination of choice. Here you can enjoy a true Scandinavian gastronomic experience with its team of top chefs. All the dishes are prepared using fresh seasonal produce – try the delectable hay-smoked salmon. After lunch it is time to escape the city. Head south for about 12 km to the scenic Moesgaard Beach. It offers crystal clear water and endless white sands. After a swim, you can explore the nearby forest on foot.
Drive back and settle down for some early evening drinks at Peter Gift, a local bar with a 100 year old history. Sit on the plant-filled patio, choose from 45 different types of beer and mingle with the locals.
