Drive out of the city south on the SS172 to Alberobello, a trip of around an hour. You will be travelling through Trulli country, known for its Trulli houses. These unique dwellings are ancient stone huts made of limestone boulders with conical roofs. They make a fascinating sight as you pass hundreds of them along the road. Visit the Church of Sant’Antonio and buy some souvenirs to take home. Time for a bite, and a traditional Panini at a family trattoria is a must. Visit the Olive Oil Museum and buy a bottle of world famous Virgin Olive Oil to take back with you.
Leaving Alberobello, head west on the SS7 for an hour drive to Matera. This ancient town has a rich past that stems back to the Palaeolithic Era and was the setting for the movie ‘The Passion of Christ’. Visit the Sassi of Matera, Stones of Matera, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the lovely Church of Santa Lucia delle Malve and then relax for a while and admire the stunning scenery in the Natural Park of Gallipoli Cognato.
After the Park, enjoy a short 20 minute drive to Altamura. This enchanting town has a wonderful historical charm with parts of the original city wall still standing. Stop for lunch at the Antica Osteria Pein Assutt. The region is known for its bread! Order freshly baked Pein, with a selection of cheeses, meat and off course – famous Negroamaro wine.
After your meal, wander around winding streets and visit the Altamura Cathedral in the town centre. Drive back to Bari for a night at the exclusive Oriente Hotel Bari. It is located in an opulent building that dates back to the 1920’s.
