There are road trips, there are car rallies and then there’s the Gumball 3000. It is the ultimate motor rally that puts celebrity drivers behind the wheel of some of the world’s most eye-catching supercars. Covering 3000 miles, this luxury automotive road trip is usually held in Europe or the USA. How could it possibly fail to capture the imagination and stir the heartbeat of any rally enthusiast, petrolhead or would-be racing driver?
As if that’s not enough, the rally also raises money for the Gumball 3000 Foundation Charity to benefit underprivileged youth. Like the race itself, the Foundation goes beyond the norm with prizes including a one-of-a-kind Fiat 500 Abarth.
History of the Gumball 3000
Gumball 3000 was started by former racing driver, Max Cooper, in 1999. The forthcoming 2019 rally will be celebrating the 21st anniversary and coming-of-age of this thrilling event. The first ever event was when 50 friends joined Cooper on an epic 3000-mile trip across Europe, and it became an annual event.
By 2001, the Gumball 3000 had grown to 106 cars including a Jaguar XJ6 driven by actor and stunt performer Johnny Knoxville. Cooper drove an original Shelby Cobra and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu (founder of the National Motor Museum at his stately home) drove a 1929 Blower Bentley. It was the oldest ever car to take part in any Gumball 3000, a record unlikely to be broken. The winning car incidentally was a Mercedes Brabus SV12 Megacar.
There are several stories about how the Gumball got its name. One likely says the name “Gumball” refers to an earlier U.S. coast-to-coast motorcycle ride known as the Cannonball where the first prize was a gumball machine.
Although Gumball 3000 is marketed as a car rally, it’s not about speed and getting there first. Instead, this global phenomenon of the racing world is all about the taking part.
Details of the 2019 Gumball 3000
Each year the Gumball 3000 entry grid is limited to just 100 cars and the entry fee is a cool £50,000. If you’re quick, you may still be able to secure a place by filling in the online application form. Of course, you also need to own your own supercar, or hire one from our fleet of exotic car rentals.

This glitzy rally takes place from 7-15 June 2019 and runs from Mykonos to Ibiza. After a two-day celebratory launch in Mykonos, this thrilling 3000-mile adventure takes in Athens, Thessaloniki, Tirana, Porto Montenegro, Venice, Monaco and Barcelona before hopping across the Mediterranean to end on the party island of Ibiza. It will conclude with a further weekend-long party including congratulations and commiserations for participants and their entourage.
